Business credit reports: read Experian and D&B without chasing one magic score
A practical audit of entity identity, trade payment data, public records, score ranges, reason codes, disputes, and the questions a lender may still ask.
For an owner preparing a financing application or correcting a business credit file.
Quick answer
Quick answer
Verify the legal name, DBA, address, industry classification, ownership or key-person information, and corporate registration displayed in the file. A mixed or fragmented identity can make the rest of the report difficult to interpret.
Start with identity before score
Verify the legal name, DBA, address, industry classification, ownership or key-person information, and corporate registration displayed in the file. A mixed or fragmented identity can make the rest of the report difficult to interpret.
Business credit is separate from personal credit, but a small-business lender may use both. Never assume that a strong business score prevents a personal review or personal guarantee.
Read each score in its own system
Experian describes business scores and risk information that can include payment trends, public records, UCC information, collections, and score factors. D&B’s PAYDEX is designed around reported payment experiences. A number from one bureau is not interchangeable with a number from another.
Record the model name, range, report date, direction of better performance, and reason codes. Avoid advice that treats “80” or any other number as a universal approval threshold.
Audit the evidence under the number
Review trade lines, balances, payment status, legal filings, collections, liens, bankruptcies, inquiry information, and corporate linkage. Match each item to accounting records and payment confirmations.
If information is factually wrong, use the bureau’s official correction or dispute process. Do not create false tradelines, buy an aged entity, or misstate ownership to manufacture a profile.
Prepare the explanation a score cannot give
A report may not explain seasonality, a one-time dispute, a vendor reporting delay, a recently paid balance, or how current cash flow supports the request. Build a short factual note with dates and documentation for material items.
Check the file before an application, after major credit events, and after corrections have had time to process. Save copies so changes are visible.
Plain answers
01Are Experian and PAYDEX the same score?
No. They are different bureau systems with different models and inputs. Read the model documentation and report context.
02Does every vendor report payments?
No. Reporting practices vary, so your internal payment history and bureau file may not match.
03Can I dispute business credit information?
Bureaus provide processes to update company information and dispute reported items. Use the official process and supporting records.
